Righteousness

« Return to Main Glossary

Righteousness is the perfect standard of goodness and holiness that comes from God. It is given to believers through faith in Jesus Christ, not by our works, and it shapes the way we live.

Righteousness is one of the most important words in the Bible. It describes God’s own character—He is perfectly holy, just, and good. Scripture says, “The LORD is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works” (Psalm 145:17). But it also describes what God requires of us. To be righteous is to live in line with His will.

The problem is that none of us are righteous in ourselves. Romans 3:10 declares, “None is righteous, no, not one.” We fall short of God’s standard. That is why we need the righteousness that only He provides through His Son.

1. God’s Standard of Righteousness

Righteousness is not defined by culture or opinion. It is defined by God. His law reveals what is right and good (Romans 7:12). Anything less than perfect obedience to His commands falls short. That is why our own works can never make us righteous in His sight.

2. The Gift of Righteousness

The good news of the gospel is that God gives righteousness as a gift. Paul writes, “the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe” (Romans 3:22). On the cross, our sin was placed on Christ, and His righteousness is credited to us (2 Corinthians 5:21). This is what theologians call “imputed righteousness.”

3. The Practice of Righteousness

Those who receive God’s righteousness by faith are also called to live righteously. John says, “whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous” (1 John 3:7). This does not mean perfection, but a life marked by obedience, honesty, justice, and holiness. True righteousness flows from a transformed heart.

4. The Protection of Righteousness

Paul describes righteousness as part of the armor of God: “the breastplate of righteousness” (Ephesians 6:14). A life shaped by righteousness guards us from the enemy’s accusations and gives us confidence before God.

5. The Hope of Righteousness

One day God will establish perfect righteousness in the new heavens and new earth. Peter says, “we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13). Until then, we long for His kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Why This Matters

Righteousness is the dividing line between those who belong to God and those who do not. Our works cannot make us right with Him, but His gift of righteousness in Christ changes everything. It gives us a new standing before God and a new way of life before the world.

Faith Lesson

Rest in Christ’s righteousness, not your own. Then pursue a life of righteousness that reflects His holiness. Trust that the God who declares you righteous will also shape you into the image of His Son.
