Law of God

« Return to Main Glossary

The Law of God is His holy standard, revealing His character, showing our sin, and pointing us to Christ who perfectly fulfilled it.

The Law of God is not merely a list of rules but the reflection of His own holy character. To understand God’s law is to glimpse His holiness, justice, and righteousness. Scripture makes it clear that the law is good, perfect, and true (Romans 7:12). It is God’s standard for how His people are to live.

1. The Claims Of The Law

The law demands complete obedience. James 2:10 says, “Whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.” God’s law is not a sliding scale of effort; it is an all-or-nothing standard. To break it once is to stand guilty before the Judge of all the earth.

2. The Works Of The Law

The law reveals sin but cannot remove it. Paul writes, “Through the law comes knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20). Like a mirror, it shows us our flaws but cannot wash them away. The sacrifices and ceremonies of the Old Testament were shadows, pointing forward to Christ. The law convicts, but it cannot cleanse.

3. The Witness Of The Law

The law testifies to the coming Savior. Jesus Himself declared, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17). Every command, every sacrifice, every moral demand points us to Christ, the perfect Law-keeper.

4. The Attributes Of The Law

The law is holy, righteous, and good (Romans 7:12). It is unchanging, just as God is unchanging. The psalmist delighted in God’s law, declaring it “sweeter also than honey” (Psalm 19:10). The law not only convicts us of sin but also guides the believer into a life that honors God.

5. The Necessity Of The Law

Without the law, we would not see our desperate need for grace. Galatians 3:24 says the law was our “guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.” The law drives us to despair of our own righteousness and run to Christ, who fulfilled it perfectly on our behalf.

Why This Matters

The law shows us who God is, who we are, and why we need the gospel. It shuts our mouths from boasting, strips us of self-righteousness, and sends us to Christ for mercy (Romans 3:19–22). Then, having been justified by faith, the same law becomes a lamp for our feet—guiding our gratitude, shaping our holiness, and teaching us how to love God and neighbor (Psalm 119:105; Matthew 22:37–40). To ignore God’s law is to miss His character; to trust the law for salvation is to miss His grace.

Faith Lesson

Do not despise God’s law. Let it do its work—exposing sin, pointing you to Christ, and guiding you in holy living. Rejoice that Jesus bore the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13) and gave you His righteousness. Delight in the law, but trust in the Savior who fulfilled it.
