Obedience

« Return to Main Glossary

Obedience is hearing God’s Word and doing what it says. It is the loving response of a heart that trusts Jesus Christ as Lord and desires to follow Him in every area of life.

Obedience in the Christian life is not blind rule-keeping. It is not about earning God’s favor or trying to outweigh our sins with good works. True obedience flows from faith and love for God. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15).

Obedience is the outward proof of an inward change. When God saves a sinner, He gives a new heart that desires to walk in His ways (Ezekiel 36:26–27). This is why Scripture often links believing with obeying—because genuine faith produces a life that listens to God and follows Him.

1. Rooted in God’s Authority

Obedience begins with recognizing that God is the Creator and King. His Word is not advice—it is the final authority. From the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20) to the teachings of Christ, God’s commands show us how to live for His glory and our good.

2. Modeled by Christ

Jesus Himself lived in perfect obedience to the Father. Even in Gethsemane, facing the agony of the cross, He prayed, “Not my will, but yours, be done” (Luke 22:42). His obedience brought our salvation (Philippians 2:8). He is both our Savior and our example.

3. Powered by the Spirit

We cannot obey God in our own strength. The Holy Spirit works in us “both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13). Obedience is not just our effort; it is God’s power at work in us, shaping our desires and enabling our actions.

4. Tested in Everyday Life

Obedience is proven in the small choices as well as the big ones—how we speak, how we treat others, how we handle temptation. James reminds us to be “doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22). True obedience is consistent, not occasional.

5. Costly but Rewarding

Obeying God can be costly. It may mean saying “no” to sin, turning down opportunities that compromise your faith, or enduring criticism for following Christ. But the blessings outweigh the cost. “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it” (Luke 11:28).

The Joy of Obedience

Obedience is not a chain; it is a pathway to freedom. Sin enslaves, but obedience to God leads to life and joy (Romans 6:16–18). The more we obey, the more we experience the peace and presence of God.

Why This Matters

A profession of faith without obedience is empty. Jesus warned, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” (Luke 6:46). Obedience shows that our faith is real, our love is genuine, and our hope is set on Him.
