Fall of Man

« Return to Main Glossary

The Fall of Man is the first act of human sin against God, when Adam and Eve disobeyed His command in the Garden of Eden, bringing sin, death, and brokenness into the world.

The story of the Fall is found in Genesis 3. God created Adam and Eve in a perfect world, free from sin, sorrow, or death. They lived in fellowship with Him and enjoyed every blessing He provided. But that peace was shattered when they chose to rebel against God’s command.

1. The Command

God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden “to work it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15). He gave one clear command: they could eat from any tree except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:16–17). This was not a harsh restriction—it was a loving test of trust and obedience.

2. The Temptation

Satan, in the form of a serpent, deceived Eve by questioning God’s Word and twisting His truth (Genesis 3:1–5). He planted doubt in her mind, suggesting that God was withholding something good. Adam, standing by, failed to protect and lead.

3. The Disobedience

Eve took the fruit and ate, and Adam ate with her (Genesis 3:6). In that moment, sin entered the world. They broke God’s law, rejected His authority, and brought guilt and shame into their hearts.

4. The Consequences

The effects were immediate and devastating:

  • Spiritual death — separation from God (Genesis 3:8–10).
  • Physical death — mortality entered human life (Romans 5:12).
  • Curse on creation — pain, toil, and suffering became part of life (Genesis 3:16–19).

5. The Promise of Redemption

Even in judgment, God gave hope. He promised a future Deliverer—the “offspring” who would crush the serpent’s head (Genesis 3:15). This is the first announcement of the gospel, fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

Why This Matters

The Fall explains why the world is broken, why our hearts are sinful, and why we need a Savior. Without understanding the Fall, we cannot understand the depth of God’s grace in salvation.

Faith Lesson

Sin always begins with doubting God’s Word and goodness. Guard your heart against lies that twist His truth. Trust that His commands are for your joy, and cling to the Redeemer who came to undo the curse of the Fall.
