Holiness is the perfect purity of God’s character and the calling of His people to be set apart from sin and devoted to Him.
Holiness is one of the most important words in Scripture. To be holy means to be set apart. God is holy in His very nature—completely pure, separate from sin, and perfect in all His ways. The angels cry, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” (Isaiah 6:3).
But holiness is not only God’s character. It is also His calling for His people. “You shall be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). Holiness is both who God is and what He commands.
1. God’s Perfect Holiness
God’s holiness is absolute. There is no darkness in Him (1 John 1:5). His holiness means He cannot tolerate sin, but it also means He is glorious, beautiful, and worthy of worship. Every other attribute of God flows from His holiness—it is the crown of His character.
2. Christ’s Display of Holiness
Jesus perfectly displayed holiness on earth. He was tempted in every way, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). In His compassion, obedience, and purity, He showed what holiness looks like in human life. His death on the cross also showed God’s holy justice against sin, while offering mercy to sinners.
3. The Call to Holiness
God calls His people to be holy. This does not mean sinless perfection in this life, but a life set apart to Him. Paul urges believers to “present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God” (Romans 12:1). Holiness means we belong to Him and live differently from the world.
4. The Process of Holiness
Holiness in the believer’s life is the work of sanctification. The Holy Spirit transforms us day by day, shaping our desires and actions to match Christ’s likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18). This is a lifelong process that will be completed only when we are with the Lord.
5. The Hope of Holiness
One day God will make His people perfectly holy. In the new creation, we will be free from sin forever and live in His presence. “Nothing unclean will ever enter it” (Revelation 21:27). Holiness will not just be our pursuit—it will be our reality.
Why This Matters
Holiness matters because without it, no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14). It shows the seriousness of sin, the wonder of Christ’s sacrifice, and the purpose of the Christian life. Holiness is not optional—it is essential.
