Glossary Definition:

Creation

« Return to Main Glossary

Creation is God’s act of bringing the universe and everything in it into existence out of nothing, by the power of His Word, for His glory.

The opening words of the Bible declare the foundation of all reality: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Creation was not an accident, a random event, or the result of chance. It was the purposeful work of the eternal God, who spoke everything into being by His Word.

1. Created by God Alone
God did not use pre-existing materials. He created “out of nothing” (ex nihilo) by His command (Hebrews 11:3). This means everything we see—stars, mountains, oceans, animals, and people—exists because God willed it. He alone is the Creator; all else is creation.

2. Ordered and Good

Genesis 1 shows that God created with order and design. Light before plants. Land before land animals. Humanity as the crown of creation. After each stage, God declared His work “good” (Genesis 1:10, 12, 18, 21, 25). When He finished, He called it “very good” (Genesis 1:31). Creation reflects His wisdom and care.

3. Made for God’s Glory

Creation exists to display the glory of God (Psalm 19:1). The beauty of the sky, the power of the oceans, the detail of a single flower—all point back to the Creator. The world is not ultimately about us; it is about Him.

4. Humanity in God’s Image

The climax of creation was the making of man and woman in God’s image (Genesis 1:26–27). Unlike the animals, humans are designed for relationship with God, reflecting His character in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness. We are stewards of His creation, called to fill the earth and rule over it under His authority.

5. Sustained by His Power

Creation is not just a past event. God continues to uphold the universe “by the word of his power” (Hebrews 1:3). Every breath, every sunrise, every season is a reminder that creation depends entirely on Him.

The Distortion of Creation

While creation was made perfect, sin has brought curse and corruption into the world (Romans 8:20–22). Disease, disaster, and death were not part of the original creation but came through the fall of man. Yet God’s plan includes the renewal of all things (Revelation 21:1–5).

Why This Matters

If God is the Creator, then He is the rightful Lord over all creation—including us. We are accountable to Him, dependent on Him, and made to worship Him. The truth of creation shapes how we view ourselves, the world, and our purpose.
