The Great Commission is Jesus’ command to make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching them until He returns.
The Great Commission is found in Matthew 28:18–20, where the risen Christ gave His church its marching orders. It is not a suggestion but a command. It is not for a few but for all disciples. Until the end of the age, the church’s mission remains unchanged: make disciples of all nations.
1. The Authority Of Christ
The Commission begins with a declaration: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18). Jesus is Lord over every nation, every people, every tribe. Mission is not based on human strategy but on Christ’s sovereign authority.
2. The Command To Go
Jesus said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). The word “go” carries the sense of moving with purpose. This does not mean every believer must cross oceans, but every believer must live with a missionary heart—at home and abroad. The gospel is for all peoples, not just for one group (read Revelation 5 and 7!).
3. The Call To Baptize
Jesus commanded baptism “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). Baptism marks entry into the visible church and declares publicly that one belongs to Christ. It is a sign of cleansing, union, and commitment.
4. The Charge To Teach
Making disciples does not end with conversion. Jesus said, “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20). True discipleship means training believers to obey Christ in every part of life. The Great Commission is not about shallow numbers but deep transformation.
5. The Promise Of His Presence
The Commission ends with a promise: “Behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). The mission is great, but we are not alone. Christ is present with His church by the Spirit, empowering and guiding His people until He comes again.
Why This Matters
The Great Commission defines the church’s purpose. We are not called to entertain or to retreat but to advance with the gospel. Every believer plays a role—praying, giving, sending, going, and witnessing. This command keeps us outward-looking, reminding us that God’s heart is for the nations.
Faith Lesson
By God’s grace, strength, and Spirit, live your life under the Great Commission. Many make this the “Great Omission,” meaning they never do it. Pray for the nations. Share the gospel with neighbors. Support missionaries. Obey Christ in making disciples wherever you are. Remember, the One who commands you also empowers you.
