Eternity

« Return to Main Glossary

Eternity is the endless reality beyond this life, where every person will spend forever—either with God in joy or apart from Him in judgment.

The Bible speaks often about eternity. Life on earth is brief, but eternity never ends. Moses prayed, “Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12). Eternity puts our lives in perspective and reminds us of what matters most.

1. The Nature Of Eternity

Eternity means endless existence. God Himself is eternal—“from everlasting to everlasting you are God” (Psalm 90:2). Human souls, made in His image, will also endure forever. Death does not end our story; it ushers us into everlasting life or everlasting judgment.

2. Eternity With God

For believers, eternity means being in God’s presence forever. Jesus promised, “In my Father’s house are many rooms…I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). Revelation describes heaven as a new heaven and new earth, where God will wipe away every tear, and death shall be no more (Revelation 21:4). This is eternal joy, peace, and fellowship with the Lord.

3. Eternity Apart From God

For the unrepentant, eternity means separation from God. Jesus spoke of “eternal punishment” contrasted with “eternal life” (Matthew 25:46). Hell is described as a place of fire, darkness, and regret. Though sobering, this truth shows the seriousness of rejecting Christ.

4. The Choice Of Eternity

Eternity confronts us with a choice. Today is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2). Every person will live forever in one of two realities: eternal life through faith in Christ or eternal death apart from Him. What we decide about Jesus determines our eternity.

5. The Perspective Of Eternity

Living with eternity in view changes how we live now. Paul writes, “We look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen…for the things that are unseen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18). Eternity gives us hope in suffering, courage in trials, and clarity about our mission.

Why This Matters

Eternity lifts our eyes above the temporary struggles of life. It keeps us from clinging too tightly to this world and reminds us that lasting joy is found only in Christ. It stirs urgency in evangelism, knowing that people’s eternal destinies are at stake. To live wisely is to live with eternity on your mind.

Faith Lesson

Examine your heart in light of eternity. Have you trusted Christ for eternal life? If so, live with hope and purpose, seeking things that last forever. Share the gospel, encourage fellow believers, and let eternity shape your daily choices. Remember: your forever is secure in Christ.
