Glossary Definition:

Deity of Christ

« Return to Main Glossary

The deity of Christ means that Jesus is truly God.  That is, fully divine, equal with the Father and the Spirit, worthy of worship, and possessing all the attributes of God.

One of the most important truths in all of Christianity is that Jesus Christ is not just a man, but God Himself in human flesh. From beginning to end, the Bible testifies that Jesus shares the very nature of God. John writes, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). To deny the deity of Christ is to deny the heart of the gospel.

1. The Claims of Jesus

Jesus made direct claims about His divinity. He said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). He accepted worship (Matthew 14:33), forgave sins (Mark 2:5–7), and declared Himself the eternal “I am” (John 8:58). These are not the words of a mere teacher but of the eternal Son of God.

2. The Works of Jesus

The miracles of Jesus prove His deity. He healed the sick, calmed storms, raised the dead, and cast out demons. But more than miracles of power, His greatest work was salvation. Only God could bear the sins of the world and conquer death through resurrection.

3. The Witness of Scripture

The New Testament writers affirm His deity again and again. Thomas confessed, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). Paul called Him “our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). The author of Hebrews says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever” (Hebrews 1:8).

4. The Attributes of Deity

Jesus possesses all the attributes of God:

  • Eternal: “Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58).
  • Omnipotent: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18).
  • Omniscient: “Lord, you know everything” (John 21:17).
  • Unchanging: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

5. The Necessity of Deity

Only if Jesus is God can He save us. A mere man could not bear the infinite weight of God’s wrath or give eternal life. The deity of Christ assures us that His death was sufficient, His resurrection is victorious, and His promises are trustworthy.

Why This Matters

The deity of Christ is not an abstract doctrine. Literally, it is the foundation of our faith. To know Jesus is to know God. To worship Jesus is to worship God. If Jesus were not fully God, we would still be in our sins and without hope.

Faith Lesson

Bow before Christ as Lord and God. Trust Him not only as a wise teacher but as the eternal Son of God. Let His deity fill you with confidence that His power is enough to save, sustain, and secure you forever.
