Ascension

« Return to Main Glossary

The ascension of Christ is Jesus’ return to heaven, forty days after His resurrection, where He now reigns at the right hand of God, interceding for His people and preparing for His return.

Main Body

The resurrection was not the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry. After appearing to His disciples and teaching them for forty days, He was taken up into heaven before their eyes (Acts 1:9). This event, known as the ascension, is one of the most important yet often overlooked parts of the gospel story.

The ascension shows that Jesus did not just rise from the dead—He returned to His throne. He is not only alive, He is exalted.

1. The Event of the Ascension

Acts 1:9 records that as the disciples watched, “he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.” This was not a hidden or symbolic moment. It was a visible, historical event witnessed by His followers. Two angels then promised that “this Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way” (Acts 1:11).

2. The Meaning of the Ascension

The ascension means Jesus’ work on earth was finished. He completed His mission of redemption (John 19:30) and returned to the Father’s glory (John 17:5). His ascension marked the successful end of His earthly ministry and the beginning of His heavenly reign.

3. Christ Exalted as Lord

At His ascension, Jesus was enthroned at the right hand of God (Ephesians 1:20–22). This position shows His supreme authority over heaven and earth. He is King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). The ascension is proof that Jesus is not only Savior but Sovereign.

4. Christ Interceding for His People

The ascended Christ is our Advocate. Hebrews 7:25 declares that He “always lives to make intercession” for us. At the right hand of the Father, He prays for His people, defends them against accusations, and secures their perseverance.

5. Christ Sending His Spirit

Before He ascended, Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would come (John 16:7). Ten days later, at Pentecost, the Spirit was poured out on the Church (Acts 2:1–4). The ascension made way for the Spirit’s power to dwell in believers and carry forward Christ’s mission.

6. Christ Preparing for Our Future

Jesus ascended to prepare a place for His people. “I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2–3). His ascension assures us that heaven is real, our future is secure, and He will one day return to bring us home.

Why This Matters

The ascension reminds us that Jesus is not absent—He is active. He reigns, intercedes, and equips His people until He comes again. Our Savior is not in the grave; He is on the throne.

Faith Lesson

Live with confidence knowing Christ is ascended and reigning. Pray boldly, because He intercedes for you. Serve faithfully, because His Spirit empowers you. Hope joyfully, because the One who went up will one day return in glory.
