Prophecy

« Return to Main Glossary

Prophecy is God’s message revealed through His chosen servants, declaring His truth, His promises, and His warnings.

Prophecy is a major theme in Scripture. It is not merely prediction of future events, though it often includes that, but the proclamation of God’s Word. Prophets were God’s mouthpieces, declaring His will to His people.

1. The Role Of Prophets

In the Old Testament, God raised up prophets to call His people back to faithfulness. They spoke God’s Word with authority, saying, “Thus says the Lord.” Sometimes their message was encouragement; often it was warning. Their role was to confront sin, reveal God’s character, and point to His promises.

2. The Fulfillment Of Prophecy In Christ

All prophecy ultimately points to Jesus. Moses promised that God would raise up a prophet like him (Deuteronomy 18:15). The New Testament shows that Jesus is the fulfillment—the final Prophet, the very Word of God made flesh (John 1:14; Hebrews 1:1–2). Prophecy finds its center in Him.

3. Predictive Prophecy

God also revealed future events through His prophets. Isaiah foretold the virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14), Micah the birthplace of the Messiah (Micah 5:2), and Zechariah His triumphal entry (Zechariah 9:9). These prophecies were fulfilled in Christ, proving the trustworthiness of God’s Word. Prophecy about Christ’s return still awaits fulfillment, giving believers hope and assurance.

4. Prophecy In The Early Church

The New Testament speaks of prophecy as a gift of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:1–3). It was given to strengthen, encourage, and comfort the church. While many hold the prophetic office tied to Scripture has closed with the completion of the canon, God’s Word still speaks prophetically whenever it is faithfully preached and applied.

5. The Purpose Of Prophecy

Prophecy is meant to reveal God’s truth, lead people to repentance, and point to salvation in Christ. It is never about exalting the prophet but always about glorifying God. True prophecy is consistent with Scripture and centered on Christ.

Why This Matters

Prophecy shows us that God speaks, God knows, and God fulfills His Word. It reminds us that history is in His hands. The fulfilled prophecies of the past give confidence in the promises yet to come. Prophecy assures us that God’s Word never fails and that His plan is unfolding exactly as He intends.

Faith Lesson

Take God’s Word seriously. Trust His promises, heed His warnings, and look for their fulfillment in Christ. Be encouraged that the God who spoke through the prophets still speaks through His written Word today. Build your life on His sure Word, for every prophecy will stand.
