Rapture

« Return to Main Glossary

The rapture is the future moment when Christ will gather His people to Himself, raising the dead in Christ and transforming the living.

The rapture is a promise of hope for believers. Though Christians differ on the exact timing in relation to Christ’s return, the Bible clearly teaches that Jesus will come to gather His people. This truth strengthens weary hearts and fuels holy living as we wait for Him.

1. The Promise Of The Rapture

Paul writes, “The Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive…will be caught up…to meet the Lord in the air” (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17). This is the rapture—the catching up of the saints to meet Christ.

2. The Transformation Of Believers

At the rapture, believers will be changed. “We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye” (1 Corinthians 15:51–52). Mortal bodies will put on immortality, and believers will be glorified to be with Christ forever.

3. The Comfort Of The Rapture

The rapture is given as a comfort: “Therefore encourage one another with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:18). It is not a doctrine of fear but of hope, reminding believers that death does not have the final word and that Christ is coming for His people.

4. The Timing Of The Rapture

Christians differ on when the rapture will occur in relation to the tribulation and the final return of Christ. Some see it as happening before the tribulation, others in the middle, and others at the end. While faithful believers may disagree, all agree on the certainty that Christ will gather His people to Himself.

5. The Hope Of The Rapture

The rapture ties into the larger hope of Christ’s second coming. It is the assurance that no matter how dark the days grow, the King will not abandon His people. Believers can face trials with confidence because the end of the story is union with Christ.

Why This Matters

The rapture points us to hope in Christ’s return. It reminds us that life is not about clinging to this world but longing for the world to come. It calls us to live in readiness, holy and expectant, knowing that the Lord may return at any moment.

Faith Lesson

Live with your eyes lifted to the skies. Encourage fellow believers with the promise of Christ’s return. Do not be weighed down by fear or despair, but wait with hope and joy, knowing that one day you will meet the Lord in the air—and so you will always be with Him.
