Advocate

« Return to Main Glossary

Jesus is our Advocate, standing before the Father on our behalf, pleading His finished work for our forgiveness and defense.

The Bible describes Jesus Christ as our Advocate. The word means “one who speaks on behalf of another.” An advocate is like a defense attorney—standing beside the accused, pleading their case. For believers, Jesus fills this role perfectly.

1. The Advocate In Scripture

John writes, “If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1). This verse shows both our need and God’s provision. We sin, but Christ pleads our case before the Father. He does not argue for our innocence but points to His righteousness.

2. The Basis Of His Advocacy

Jesus advocates for us on the basis of His finished work on the cross. His blood has already paid the penalty for our sins. As Hebrews 7:25 says, He “always lives to make intercession” for those who draw near to God through Him. His advocacy is not a desperate appeal but a declaration that justice has been satisfied.

3. The Character Of Our Advocate

Jesus is called “the righteous.” Unlike us, He has no sin. His perfect obedience makes Him the only suitable Advocate. Because He is both God and man, He represents us fully before the Father while perfectly reflecting God’s holiness.

4. The Spirit As Advocate

Scripture also calls the Holy Spirit our Advocate or “Helper” (John 14:16, 26). While Jesus intercedes for us in heaven, the Spirit advocates within us—teaching, convicting, and comforting. Together, Christ and the Spirit ensure that believers are never without representation before God.

5. The Effect Of Christ’s Advocacy

Because Jesus is our Advocate, believers can approach God with confidence. Romans 8:34 asks, “Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.” Our standing is secure, not because of our works, but because our Advocate pleads His blood and righteousness.

Why This Matters

Without an Advocate, our sins would condemn us. Satan is called “the accuser,” but his accusations cannot stand against Christ’s defense. Knowing that Jesus advocates for us gives assurance in the face of guilt and hope in the face of judgment. We are not left to plead our own case—Christ pleads for us, and His word is final.

Faith Lesson

Rest in the advocacy of Christ. When you sin, do not run from God in fear—run to Him in faith, knowing that Jesus speaks on your behalf. Thank Him that His blood silences every accusation and secures your place as a beloved child of God.
