The Second Coming, or Parousia, is the promised return of Jesus Christ in glory to judge the world, gather His people, and make all things new.
The Bible promises that history is moving toward a climax: the return of Jesus Christ. This event is called the Second Coming, or Parousia, which means “arrival” or “presence.” Unlike His first coming in humility, Jesus will return in glory, power, and judgment.
1. A Certain Promise
The Second Coming is not speculation—it is certain. Jesus Himself said, “I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also” (John 14:3). Angels declared at His ascension that “this Jesus… will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). The New Testament is filled with this promise.
2. A Visible Return
Christ’s return will not be hidden or secret. Revelation 1:7 declares, “Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him.” Unlike His first coming in a manger, His second coming will be in majesty, witnessed by the whole world.
3. A Day of Judgment
At His return, Jesus will judge both the living and the dead. Paul said, “He has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed” (Acts 17:31). For unbelievers, this day will bring wrath. For believers, it will bring vindication and reward.
4. A Gathering of His People
The Second Coming is the great hope of the Church. At His return, the dead in Christ will rise, and living believers will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17). It is the moment when all of God’s people will be united with Christ forever.
5. A Renewal of All Things
The Second Coming will bring not only judgment and salvation, but also renewal. Jesus will make “a new heaven and a new earth” where righteousness dwells (Revelation 21:1–5; 2 Peter 3:13). The curse of sin will be reversed, and creation will be restored to its original glory.
Why This Matters
The Second Coming is not just a future doctrine—it shapes how we live now. It calls us to holiness, hope, and perseverance. Knowing that Christ is returning keeps us awake, alert, and faithful, even when the world grows dark.
Faith Lesson
Live each day as though Christ could return at any moment. Be watchful, be faithful, and be hopeful. For the King who came once in humility will come again in glory—and every believer will see Him face to face.
